We naturally lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day without even realising. Often this is just caused by washing or brushing our hair and is nothing to be concerned about. However, millions of both men and women in the UK will experience more excessive hair loss that will become noticeable.
In some cases hair loss is unavoidable – whether due to male pattern baldness or a condition such as alopecia areata.
But there are ways to reduce your hair loss when it comes to your hair care habits.
Expert Nosheen Choudhry, who struggled for years with alopecia and telogen effluvium – a skin disorder that causes hair to shed from the scalp – spoke with Express.co.uk exclusively to explain further.
The founder of Nosheen Hair Oil shared her top tips when it came to preventing hair loss.
How often should I wash my hair?
“We recommend that you should limit the amount you wash your hair weekly,” she said.
“Two to three times a week is ideal.
“The thicker your hair and the less oil, the less you need to shampoo.
“Some people with dry hair or curly hair can wash much less frequently without a problem.”
Not washing enough is a problem
Ms Choudhry said: “When you don’t wash your hair enough, you allow oils and dirt to build up on your scalp and clog your pores, paving the way for actual hair loss.
“That’s why finding the perfect frequency for your shampooing schedule is the key to caring for your scalp and avoiding hair loss.
“Keeping the scalp clean is absolutely necessary so there is no buildup of sebum and impurities which can cause hair loss.”
Can overwashing cause hair loss?
“Most modern shampoos are relatively mild,” she said.
“Washing everyday, won’t cause hair loss itself. Losing a few hairs per day is normal.
“It’s part of the normal hair growth cycle and for the most part, it’s relatively unnoticeable.
“Over-washing your hair won’t cause it to fall out, all of the extra stuff that you do after you wash your hair can.
“Over-styling with hot tools, especially if your hair is dry from washing it everyday, is one of the quickest ways to damage your hair to a point where it is brittle and will fall out.”
Other lifestyle habits that can cause hair loss
Ms Choudhry listed the following as potential causes of hair loss:
- Over bleaching
- Hot showers
- Tight hairstyles
- Overusing of hair styling tools
- Too much sun exposure
- Not washing your hair often
- Scratching your head causing fungal infections or irritation
- Mishandling wet hair
- Skipping meals and lacking essential nutrients.
According to the NHS hair loss is “not usually anything to be worried about”.
However, it recommends seeing a GP if:
- You have sudden hair loss
- You develop bald patches
- You’re losing hair in clumps
- Your head also itches and burns
- You’re worried about your hair loss.
This is because it could be caused by an illness, stress or iron deficiency among other issues.
