After declaring 2020 her Year of Health, Rebel Wilson has cultivated a loyal fan following for those looking to track the star’s fitness journey. As well as posting her weightloss and newfound zeal for fitness, Wilson has been open about her health. Typically, Hollywood stars are notorious for their privacy. It’s these private lives that they guard most passionately, but in Wilson’s case she’s an open book – even for those topics that are difficult to discuss.
Recently, the star shared with fans some sad news. “I got some bad news today and I didn’t have anyone to share it with…but I guess I gotta tell someone,” Wilson wrote on her Instagram post. “To all the women out there struggling with fertility, I feel ya.”
She added, “The universe works in mysterious ways and sometimes it all doesn’t make sense…but I hope there’s light about to shine through all the dark clouds.”
Wilson shared the news alongside a somber photo of herself, where the 41-year-old was dressed casually in a zip-up hoodie and dark pants, walking along the beach at sunset. Despite the news she shared with fans on a topic that’s so rarely discussed, Wilson received an outpouring of support and thanks to her vulnerability and openness, many women around the world are using the opportunity to share their own struggles with fertility.
Wilson isn’t the first celebrity to freeze her eggs. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian have also chosen to do so, with Hilton even admitting that freezing her eggs gave her “control” over her fertility, saying: “I think every woman should do it because you can really control it and not have that ‘Oh my God, I need to get married [feeling].” Halsey is another who has battled reproductive health challenges after being diagnosed with endometriosis and having to endure a miscarriage on stage in front of hundreds of fans. She explained that freezing her eggs was important to her as she is fortunate enough to have that as an option. “I need to be aggressive about protecting my fertility, about protecting myself,” said Halsey.
Wilson has previously shared her struggles with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and made a decision last year to freeze her eggs. “I was thinking about fertility and having good quality eggs in the bank, so I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to do this, I’m going to get healthy,” a decision which saw her embark on a fitness journey in December of 2019.
PCOS is a condition that many struggle with, causing irregular periods, weight gain, thinning hair and infertility, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. She told E! News that since being diagnosed with PCOS in her 20s, she began gaining weight rapidly. “It’s just a hormone imbalance and you gain a lot of weight usually and that’s how it manifested in me,” said Wilson. “Sometimes, I feel sad, but then at the same time, I worked my body to my advantage. I like being all sizes. It’s just now turning 40, I am more health conscious and thinking of starting a family.”
In the video she shared to Instagram about her decision to freeze her eggs, Wilson said: “As all good career women out there should know, if that’s something that interests you, it’s a pretty good time to do it. Getting to 40s is kind of even leaving it a little too late. It’s better to do it a bit earlier if you can.”
