Study shows 10 leading causes of early death – from high BMI to smoking

Millions of people around the globe are shortening their life expectancy due to certain factors.

For instance, high systolic blood pressure has been reported as the number one cause of premature death around the world, causing 10,845,595 deaths.

High blood pressure affects one in three adults in the UK, Blood Pressure UK notes, adding that the health condition is the “third biggest risk factor for all disease”.

Any blood pressure reading above 140/90mmHg is considered to be high-risk, the NHS says.

The next major cause of death worldwide, according to the research, is smoking (7.7 million deaths), then air pollution (6.7 million).

The NHS says: “Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK.

“Every year around 76,000 people in the UK die from smoking, with many more living with debilitating smoking-related illnesses.”

Next on the study list is high fasting plasma glucose (6.5 million), Utility Bidder noted.

This is indicative of diabetes, which is said to affect more than five million people in the UK, Diabetes UK notes.

The NHS warns type 2 diabetes can lead to:

  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Loss of feeling and pain (nerve damage)
  • Foot problems – like sores and infections
  • Vision loss and blindness
  • Miscarriage and stillbirth
  • Problems with your kidneys
  • Sexual problems.

“Controlling your blood sugar level and having regular diabetes check-ups is the best way to lower your risk of complications,” the NHS adds.

Following that is high body mass index (five million), outdoor air pollution (4.5 million), alcohol use (2.5 million), and indoor air pollution (2.3 million).

Body mass index (BMI) will fit into one of the following:

  • Under 18.5 – This is described as underweight.
  • Between 18.5 and 24.9 – A healthy range
  • Between 25 and 29.9 – Overweight
  • Between 30 and 39.9 – Obesity
  • 40 or over – Severe obesity.

People falling into the overweight or obese categories would benefit from exercising more and eating less to lose weight.

Healthy weight loss involves losing up to two pounds per week (and no more).

As for alcohol consumption, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says it’s connected to high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems.

The last contributing factors to premature death globally are a diet high in sodium (1.9 million) and a diet low in high grains (1.8 million).
